WFLA hosts its first Walking Football National Cup Finals at Redditch Utd
Over 400 players, coaches, and managers came together on the 9th and 10th of September for the Walking Football National Cup Finals.
Created for members of the FA-affiliated leagues – affiliated to the WFLA – the ball began rolling back in February 2023 as teams competed in locals, regionals, and a grand final at Valley Stadium to qualify.
Three organisations came together to support the two day event – the WFLA, EWFC, and NWFA.
The EWFC once again opened it’s home, Valley Stadium in Redditch, to host the competition while the NWFA provided all of the trophies.
Six categories played throughout the day – men’s over 50, 60, 65, 70, and women’s over 40 and 50.
Tony Norton, EWFC Chairman and acting Chairman of the WFLA said:
“Seeing all the smiles and quality walking football is great, but seeing the reaction by winners Braunton and runners-up Hartshill in the women’s over 50 competition when it was announced was beautiful. The teams both went to each other immediately to congratulate one another as both teams had used players that were recreational players and never played a competition before, therefore didn’t expect to do so well.”
Although the competition didn’t result in trophies for everyone – it brought people together who share a passion, love, and enthusiasm for walking football.
After the weekend’s success, Tony Norton can confirm that the “plans and registration for the National Tournament 2024 have already started.”
